Safety Guidelines for Home Pools

Swimming pools should always be places of joy, but each year, many families face tragedies due to pool accidents involving young children. Safe House Property Inspections, in partnership with HCJ Pool Services, is committed to preventing these incidents by promoting effective safety guidelines and offering expert services for pool inspections and maintenance.

Why Pool Safety Matters

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), approximately 300 children under the age of five drown in residential pools annually. Additionally, over 2,000 children in the same age group require emergency treatment due to submersion incidents. Most of these accidents occur in pools owned by family or friends and happen within five minutes of a child’s disappearance.

Key Pool Safety Guidelines

  1. Install Proper Barriers: The top of a pool barrier should be at least 48 inches above ground. Solid barriers should not have indentations or protrusions that children can climb.

  2. Control Access Points: Pedestrian gates should be self-closing and self-latching, opening away from the pool. The latch release mechanism should be positioned at least 54 inches from the ground to prevent young children from reaching it.

  3. Secure Pool Ladders and Steps: For above-ground pools, secure or remove ladders when not in use. Alternatively, surround the ladder with an approved barrier.

  4. Alarm Systems for Doors: Doors that provide direct access to the pool should have audible alarms that sound within seven seconds of opening. The alarm should be loud enough (at least 85 decibels) to alert caregivers promptly.

  5. Power Safety Covers: Install power safety covers that meet ASTM F1346-91 standards. These covers provide an additional layer of protection when the pool is not in use.
